Infected blood inquiry: Parents and children who have lost relatives could get £100,000 compensation. The infected blood scandal affected the lives of tens of thousands of NHS patients who were unknowingly given contaminated blood products between the 1970s and 1991.

People infected with HIV

You can apply to join EIBSS if you were infected with HIV as a result of treatment with NHS blood, blood products or tissue. If you were directly infected with HIV by someone who was infected through treatment with NHS blood, blood products or tissue you can also apply for this payment.

In the 1970s and 1980s 4,689 people with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders were infected with HIV and hepatitis viruses through the use of contaminated clotting factors. Some of those unintentionally infected their partners, often because they were unaware of their own infection.

Why were people given infected blood? ›

People with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders were given blood infected with HIV and hepatitis viruses, during the 1970s and 1980s. It was the result of a new treatment intended to make their lives better. A clotting agent called Factor VIII was introduced to help their blood clot.

What happens when someone gets a blood infection? ›

Sepsis happens when an infection you already have triggers a chain reaction throughout your body. Infections that lead to sepsis most often start in the lung, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death.

Blood culture: A blood culture test tries to identify what type of bacteria or fungi caused infection in the blood. Blood cultures are collected separately from other blood tests. They are usually taken more than once from different veins. It can take several days to get the results of a blood culture.

Septicemia, or sepsis, is the clinical name for blood poisoning by bacteria. It is the body's most extreme response to an infection. Sepsis that progresses to septic shock has a death rate as high as 50%, depending on the type of organism involved. Sepsis is a medical emergency and needs urgent medical treatment.

Skin contaminants are the most common blood culture contamination source. Roughly 20% of the microbes present in skin reside deep in the dermis layer and may be drawn into blood specimens.

Factor XIII deficiency is a rare bleeding disorder. Researchers have identified an inherited form and a less severe form that is acquired during a person's lifetime. Signs and symptoms of inherited factor XIII deficiency begin soon after birth, usually with abnormal bleeding from the umbilical cord stump.
